Geographical Profile of Sylhet District


Geographical location: 240 36'-25011 'north latitude 910 38'-92030' East longitude. 3,390.40 sq km or 1347.65 sq. Miles. Khasia-Jaintia Hills of India, Moulvibazar district on the south, India's Cachar and eastern India Karimganj district, Sunamganj and Habiganj districts on the west. Annual average maximum temperature is 33.20 C, minimum temperature is 13.60 C. Total annual rainfall is 3334 m. Its main and longest river Surma (350km), the other major river is Kushiyara. There are a total of 82 haor-bills in this district. Among them, Singhua bills (12.65 sq km), Chatla Bills (11.86 sq km) are notable. The total reserve is 2336.42 sq km in the district. The parts of Khasia and Jaintia hills in India are very special in the upper east corner of the district. There are several small hills and tilas in Sylhet, including Jaintapur Tila (54 meters), Shari Tila (92m), Lalakhal Tila (135m), Tila of Dhaka South Levels (77.7m) are notable.
