Sylhet Sadar Upazila at a glance

Brief description of the origin, naming and creation of the upazila:

The history of the distant past of Sylhet Sadar Upazila, which was formed on the banks of Surma river, is not known for sure. According to the information received, in ancient times there was a separate state called Shrihatta and for some time this area was also known as Harikela. In the 7th century, the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang, while traveling to India, referred to this coastal area as 'Silichattal'. During the reign of the Chandra dynasty in Bengal in the tenth century, an administrative division called Srihattamandal was formed under King Srichandra, which was ruled by feudal lords. Historians believe that the name Shrihat or Sylhet originated from this Shrihat Mandal and finally the name 'Sylhet'.

Between the sixth and twelfth centuries, human habitation increased and evidence of the development of a civilization in the area was found. After the conquest of Sylhet by Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in 1303 AD, Sylhet came under Muslim sultans. During the 162 Salek Company period it was converted into Sadar.

Until 184, Sylhet was part of the Dhaka division. On 12 September 174, Sylhet was annexed to the newly formed province of Assam. Until 1947, Sylhet remained a district of Assam. After the creation of Pakistan, Sylhet became a district of East Pakistan. During the Pakistan period, Sylhet district was divided into 4 subdivisions, namely: Sylhet Sadar, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj.

After independence, in 1974, the four subdivisions of the greater Sylhet district were upgraded and Sylhet district was reorganized. The reorganized Sylhet district then had 11 police stations (administrative unit, not police station). Needless to say, the Circle Officer (Development) supervised, coordinated and implemented government development activities as the administrative head in each administrative police station. It may be mentioned that there are 12 upazilas in the present Sylhet district. The latest upazila to be created under the administrative decentralization policy is Dakshin Surma.

In 1982, all the administrative police stations were upgraded. Following this, all the administrative thanas (standardized thanas) were renamed as 'upazilas' by the Local Government (Upazila Parishad and Upazila Administration Reorganization) Ordinance of 1982. In this process, on 12 December 1983, 'Sylhet Sadar Thana' was renamed as 'Sylhet Sadar Upazila'.

Location of the upazila: Uttrekompaniganj and Gowainghat upazilas, Purbegolapganj and Kanaighat upazilas, South Surma upazila in the south, Bishwanath upazila in the west and Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district.
