Ataul Gani Osmani (1917-1974)
The ancestral home of Ataul Gani Osmani, the chief commander of the great liberation war of Bangladesh, is at Dayamir village in Balaganj upazila. He was born on September 1, 1918 in Sunamganj, his father's workplace. B.A. from Aligarh University in 1938. Degree. He joined the British Indian Army in 1939 while pursuing postgraduate studies. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel in 1958 and retired from the Army in the same post in 1986. His contribution to the formation of the East Bengal Regiment as a competent regiment in the Pakistan Army is noteworthy. He joined politics in 1970. MNO was elected in the seventies. When the war of liberation started on March 26, 1971, Osmani joined the war of liberation. He was made the Commander-in-Chief of the Provisional Government formed on 10 April 1971. Under his able leadership, the patriotic Mukti Bahini snatched the independence of Bangladesh. In recognition of Osmani's contribution to the War of Liberation, the Government of Bangladesh later promoted him to the rank of General, effective from 16 December 1971. He retired from the army for the second time on 6 April 1972 when the post of Chief of the Armed Forces was abolished. In his colorful life he served as a minister, MP, advisor etc. He formed a political party called Jatiya Janata Party in 1967 and became active in politics. He died on 17 February 1984.
Abul Mal Abdul Muhith
Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, an economist, diplomat, linguist and freedom fighter, was born in 1934 in an aristocratic Muslim family in Sylhet.
Mr. Muhith is one of the leaders of the Pakistani movement, the second son of Advocate Abu Ahmed Abdul Hafeez, the then leader of the Sylhet District Muslim League. His mother Syed Shah Banu Chowdhury was also active in politics.
Mr. Muhith was very talented in his student life. He passed first class in IA examination from Sylhet MC College in 1951, first class in BA (Hons) examination in English Literature from Dhaka University in 1954 and first MA in 1955 with distinction from the same university. While employed, he studied at Oxford University and earned an MPA degree from Harvard University.
After joining the Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1958, Mr. Muhith held various important positions in the then East Pakistan, Central Pakistan and later in the Government of Bangladesh. In 1972, he was appointed Planning Secretary and in 1986, he was appointed Secretary in the External Resources Department of the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
Mr. Muhith, when he was the Chief and Deputy Secretary of the Pakistan Planning Commission, prepared a report on the disparity between East and West Pakistan in 1986 and this was the first report on the subject in the Pakistan National Assembly. He was the first diplomat at the Washington embassy to leave Pakistan during the war of independence and show allegiance to Bangladesh.
Mr. Muhith is an expert in economic diplomacy. He is a well-known figure in various organizations of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, Islamic Development Bank and the United Nations.
After retiring voluntarily in 1981, he joined the Ford Foundation and IFAD as an economics and development specialist. He served as the Minister of Finance and Planning in 1972-73. Since then he has worked as an expert in various organizations of the World Bank and the United Nations. He was a Visiting Fellow at Princeton University in 1974 and 1975.
Mr. Muhith is equally adept as a writer. Apart from books on administration and liberation war, he has published 21 books on various subjects.
He was a pioneer in the Bangladesh environmental movement and was the founding president of Bapar.
Mr. Muhith is married. Wife Syed Sabia Muhith is a designer. The first of their three children, Samina Muhith, is a banker and financial expert, the eldest son, Shahed Muhith, is a realist, and the youngest son, Samir Muhith, is a teacher.
Mr. Muhith was appointed Finance Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh on January 8, 2009.
National Professor Brigadier (Retd.) Abdul Malik
National Professor Brigadier (Retd.) Abdul Malik, the son of Sylhet, was born on 1 December 1929 in the village of Paschimbhag in Kuchai Union of South Surma Upazila. His father's name was Furkan Ali and his mother's name was Syeda Nurunnesa Khatun. Educational Qualifications: MBBS (Dhaka), MRCP (UK), FRCP (Glasgow), FRCP (Edinburgh), FCPS (BD), FCCP (USA), FACC (USA) ).
Current position and activities of National Professor Brigadier (Retd.) Abdul Malik
Founding Secretary General, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, President, Advisory Council, Bangladesh Cardiac Society, Chairman, Academic Council, National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute, Advisor (Honorary) National Center for Controlling Committee, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, Member, Management Committee, Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Institute.
Mr. Malik joined the Pakistan Army Medical Corps in 1955. He established a Cardiac Center at the Military Hospital, Rawalpindi. Sheikh Mujib worked as a professor of cardiology at the Medical University) and established a cardiac unit. He was an expert on the WHO's Cardiovascular Disease Expert Panel Committee from 1980 to 2000. He served as an advisor to the caretaker government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2001. He was awarded the Independence Medal in 2004 and was elected a National Professor in 2008. He is the author of two books titled "Some Things of Life" and "Path of Light". In his personal life he is the father of 2 sons and 1 daughter. His daughter Dr. Fazilatunnesa Malik is a Professor in the Department of Cardiology, National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute, Dhaka. His son Md. Masood Malik is a businessman and his other son Md. Manzoor Malik is currently working in Canada.
